I enjoyed the articles on individual mystery writers and I would recommend this book if you want to learn about mystery authors and their characters up to, say, 1980. I prefer the books by Otto Penzler, but I do recommend this one, also.

The meat of the book is in its listings, which are unusually complete... a monumental piece of scholarship! -- NYT Review of Books.
